Reagan, Davis reunite for stem cell cause

NEW YORK, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Former U.S. first lady Nancy Reagan and her estranged daughter, Patti Davis, have reunited to help support stem cell research efforts.

The famed mother and daughter, whose conflicting political views tore their relationship apart, have come together to fight for a type of research that might have helped former President Ronald Reagan conquer his unsuccessful fight with Alzheimer's disease, a Life magazine news release said.

"For 10 years, we watched as Alzheimer's disease whittled away my father," Davis told Life for an upcoming issue. "As isolating as the experience was, we never forgot we were only one of thousands upon thousands of families going through the same thing."

The duo confess their varied political views helped tear their family apart, but like any family, their bonds are the type that cannot break and are strengthened by hope.

"We are sons and daughters," added Davis, who joins her mother in urging further stem cell research. "Ultimately, love startles us awake, brings us home, and lets us know we never really left."
