NEW YORK, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- U.S. director Catherine Hardwicke says she sees a link between "The Nativity Story" and her previous films, since all three focus on teenage protagonists.
Best-known for her gritty, youth-oriented films "Thirteen" and "Lords of Dogtown," Hardwicke's latest movie is based on the Bible story about Jesus Christ's miraculous conception and birth.
Sixteen-year-old "Whale Rider" actress Keisha Castle-Hughes plays Jesus's mother, Mary, while newcomer Oscar Isaac plays the Messiah's earthly father, Joseph.
"This is the third in my teenage trilogy," Hardwicke told reporters in New York recently. "It is a film about the most famous teenager in the world. What drew me in after I read the script and began my research was that most scholars believe that Mary was 13 or 14 years old at the time, which is kind of amazing ... But I was thinking of the girls from 'Thirteen.' How would they react if this incredible opportunity and burden was presented to them?"
