NEWARK, N.J., Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Singer Whitney Houston is nearly $2 million behind in bills and taxes on her Mendham Township, N.J., mansion and could wind up losing the estate.
Houston owes nearly $83,000 in municipal property taxes and has failed to make nearly $1 million in mortgage payments, the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger reported Thursday.
Her mortgage company has filed a lawsuit that triggered the scheduling of a sheriff's sale in Morris County.
Houston bought the 10-acre Mendham estate in 1987 for $2.7 million and she had paid all of her taxes through 2005, officials said.
But the township has not received any tax payments this year, officials said.
"We're not going to have to close our doors tomorrow," said township clerk Penny Newell said of the $82,948 owed by Houston. "But will we need that money at some point? Sure."
