LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Actor Joe Pesci was billed as the featured speaker at the Breeders' Cup Kick-Off Luncheon Monday as the fabled race returns to Kentucky's Churchill Downs.

The Academy Award-winning actor was asked to speak at the luncheon as part of an effort by race officials to increase awareness of the first return of Racing's Championship Day to the celebrated racetrack since 2000, said The Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Sentinel.

Known for his roles in the "Lethal Weapon" films and the mobster film "Goodfellas," which garnered him his Best Supporting Actor Oscar win, Pesci is no stranger to the horse racing scene.

Pesci is already involved with thoroughbred racing through his part ownership of a racing horse named Pesci, that has won three of the seven races it has entered to this point.

The daughter of famed race horse Stormy Atlantic, Pesci was the runner-up in 2004's Grade III Hawthorne Handicap and came in third at Hollywood Park's Grade I Milady Breeders' Cup, the newspaper said.
