LOS ANGELES, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Only in Los Angeles would the centuries-old Mexican tradition of honoring the dead take on a festive bent with a party in a Hollywood cemetery.
The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday that Hollywood historian Sparrow Morgan will erect altars on the graves of film and television actors that have played the legendary Spanish lover, Don Juan, in a Day of the Dead homage.
A shrine will be decorated with photographs of Douglas Fairbanks Sr., Errol Flynn and John Barrymore.
The Day of the Dead, a solemn family-oriented occasion in Mexico, is usually celebrated Nov. 1-2.
"In Hollywood," Morgan told the Times, "we have a tendency to adopt other people's legacies, because we don't have much of a history of our own; I feel these people are our ancestors, like they are my family."
Organizers said they expected more than 100 altars will be erected beginning Saturday evening, with most of the participants being of non-Latino heritage.
