Graveyard space opens up for actress Valli

ROME, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Described by Mussolini as one of "the most beautiful women in the world," Italian actress Alida Valli still had to wait six months for a burial plot.

The late Italian dictator said she was second only to Greta Garbo.

The Telegraph reported Saturday that the wait is over and Valli can now be buried at an exclusive Verano cemetery.

The actress's death at 83 prompted national mourning and her body ceremoniously lay in state for two days on the Capitoline hill, but then it was remanded to storage in a freezer in Milan. It will now be laid to rest in the Verano cemetery, a high-demand burial place set aside for "exceptional people."

The Telegraph said a six-month wait to be granted a coveted spot was not unusual. It was a letter from Valli's son, Carlo De Mejo, that prompted the city council to decide to get the process moving.
