Lincoln Center set to embrace 'Utopia'

NEW YORK, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- New York's Lincoln Center is set become the locale for an expansive production of Tom Stoppard's Russian drama, "The Coast of Utopia."

With its over 70 roles and 35 years worth of Russian history, Stoppard's work has proved a daunting task for director Jack O'Brien and his crew, but The New York Times reported the three-part production is set to launch this Tuesday.

After previews of the first part of the play begin this week, O'Brien will continue releasing the following two parts over the next six months, a concept that has proven difficult for casting on the immense project.

"Usually there's a place where you get to leave the interpretive process, after opening night, where you kind of go, 'Now, we're on to the next phase,'" said O'Brien. "With this, we're going to have opening nights, and they're going to be like, 'Yeah, boy, this is opening night, I'll see you in the morning' to start it all over again."

The Times said joining O'Brien in the seemingly impossible mission is designer Catherine Zuber, who is the lone designer for a production requiring more than 6,000 costumes.
