NEW YORK, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Actor Robin Williams is thanking fans for their support during his recent stay in a U.S. rehab center where he was treated for alcoholism.

Speaking with "Entertainment Tonight," the 55-year-old Williams said he was extremely grateful for all the emotional assistance his fans offered while he attempted to battle his alcohol addiction.

"I want to thank all the people who sent amazing letters of support and kindness and prayers," Williams said. "People said, 'I understand and God bless you, God help you.' And that's the key, God.

"I am grateful, truly grateful."

The Oscar-winning actor, whose new comedy, "Man of the Years," is set to open in U.S. theaters, found something to joke about in regards to the somber affair. He said his troubles were overshadowed by the more highly publicized arrest and controversial outburst of anti-Semitic comments of Mel Gibson.

"I got lucky," said. "I went into rehab the day Mel got arrested. So in that way, I got a little bit of a smokescreen!"
