LONDON, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Karl Lagerfeld has lashed out at Paris-based author Alicia Drake over claims in her new book that the German-born fashion designer is not from royalty.

The Sunday Telegraph reported that the famously extravagant designer sent Drake a furious letter over the allegations she published in her book, "The Beautiful Fall," that were entirely based on claims made by Lagerfeld's cousin, Kurt.

"Your book is more based on suppositions and improvised conclusions than on truth," the Chanel designer wrote in the letter. "(Kurt) hated me and he hated my mother, as he told you."

Lagerfeld has long claimed to have grown up in a 14-room castle that was manned by a slew of servants and which housed 56 war refugees, but his cousin told Drake that the designer actually had a middle-class upbringing in a simple four-bedroom home.

The paper said that while Lagerfeld had significant issues regarding comments on his upbringing, he said nothing in the letter to argue Drake's numerous references to his flamboyant history.
