Stars honored by Americana awards

NASHVILLE, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- An eclectic group of singers and songwriters received awards at the American Honors and Awards in Nashville.

James McMurtry won album of the year for "Childish Things," which blasts the U.S. political landscape, while flag-waver Charlie Daniels won the Spirit of Americana Free Speech Award, the Nashville Tennessean reported.

The Americana awards honor performers in what is considered American roots music -- a genre the Tennessean said Saturday is centered in the Nashville area.

Other winners Friday night included Neil Young, guitarist Kenny Vaughn and The Greencards.

Lifetime achievement awards went to Vaughn and luminaries such as Rodney Crowell, New Orleans' Allan Toussiant and Sugar Hill Records founder Barry Poss.
