TV cop dramas on tap for 'Vegas' creator

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Gary Scott Thompson, the mind behind NBC's "Las Vegas," is set to head up two new U.S. TV police dramas for both NBC and rival CBS.

The Hollywood Reporter said Thompson has signed on to develop a pilot for a new CBS cop drama entitled "Protect and Serve," as well as a yet untitled NBC pilot revolving around a New York City police officer.

Thompson said both new dramas will be character-driven and "Protect and Serve" will also revolve around the personal lives of its lead Los Angeles street cops as well.

"It has a procedural edge to it," Thompson said of the CBS pilot. "It's not serialized and yet it's character-driven."

The newspaper said that with NBC Universal TV providing a home for both new dramas, Thompson will be teamed with writers Mark Gibson and Philip Halprin for his CBS offering while gathering solo writing credits for his NBC creation.
