PHILIDELPHIA, Pa., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Actress Zooey Deschanel is set to replace singer Pink in "The Gospel According to Janis," the drama set to start filming in Philadelphia.

Daily Variety reported on Pink's replacement in the Penelpoe Spheeris-directed musical drama about Janis Joplin, written with David Dalton.

Producer Peter Newman told Variety the turning point of the script was co-writer Dalton.

Working for Rolling Stone, Dalton was assigned to compare the troubled Joplin to singer and actress Judy Garland. Dalton reportedly accompanied Joplin on tour.

Dalton's adventure soon became the central plot of the film, and an actor soon will be cast to play him.

Deschanel has spent the past four months working with a vocal coach to train her pipes to approximate Joplin's unique vocals, the report said.
