Depp to star in 'Rex Mundi' series

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Scriptwriter Jim Uhls has been hired to adapt a series of graphic novels into a feature for Johnny Depp to star in and produce.

Uhls, who adapted Chuck Palahniuk's novel "Fight Club" into a successful movie, will turn his attention to "Rex Mundi," a series by Arvid Nelson and Eric Johnson, The Los Angeles Times said Wednesday. Depp's production company Infinitum Nihil (Infinite Nothing) will produce it, the paper said.

The "Rex Mundi" (King of the World) series, set in 1933, presents a world in which the Reformation never occurred, the Spanish Inquisition still goes on, the Catholic Church dominates Europe and the colonies dot the rest of the world, the newspaper said. Depp would play a pathologist investigating the death of a priest who found Depp's character as an orphan.

Uhls said the series contains "murders and a mystery and the lead character discovers a massive conspiracy, biblical in its origin," the newspaper said.
