'Gridiron Gang' No. 1 at box office

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- The football drama "Gridron Gang" was U.S. box office champion taking in $15 million in its opening weekend while the crime-drama "The Black Dahlia" disappointed.

The "Gridiron Gang" recouped half of its $30 million cost, raking in estimated gross receipts $15 million, $4,280 per screen, Box Office Mojo reported. "The Black Dahlia" was second with $10.3 million in estimated receipts on 2,226 screens in its debut weekend.

"Everyone's Hero" was third with $6.1 million; "The Last Kiss," was fourth with $4.7 million and "The Covenant" -- last week's No. 1 -- took in $4.7 million for a two-week total of $15.7 million.

"Invincible" was sixth with $3.9 million in receipts; "The Illusionist" was seventh with more than $3.7 million; "Little Miss Sunshine" was eighth with $3.3 million; "Hollywoodland" was ninth with $2.7 million, and "Crank" was in disappointing 10th place with estimated receipts of $2.7 million in its third week.
