NEW YORK, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Yusuf Islam, once known as British singer Cat Stevens, is set to release his first modern pop album in 28 years as part of a deal with Atlantic Records.
A press release from Market Wire said Islam's Ya Records label had reached an agreement with Atlantic to distribute his new album in North America this November, officially marking the acclaimed singer's return to U.S. airwaves.
"I feel right about making music and singing about life in this fragile world again. It is important for me to be able to help bridge the cultural gaps others are sometimes frightened to cross." the 58-year-old singer said of his return.
While performing as Cat Stevens during the '70s, Islam reached fame with several top 10 albums including "Tea for the Tillerman" and "Catch Bull at Four" before a near death experience reoriented his life.
After nearly drowning in the Pacific Ocean, the singer embraced Islam and after changing his name became a strong proponent of Islamic education throughout the world.
