Branagh tabbed to head 'Sleuth' remake

LONDON, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- When the film production of "Sleuth" begins in London next year, actor-director Kenneth Branagh will be at the helm of the long-awaited cinematic remake.

"Sleuth" was originally a Tony award-winning play from British playwright Anthony Shaffer before it was adapted for the big screen in 1974 by director Joseph Mankiewicz -- and will be revisited again beginning in January by Branagh and his cast, said Zap2it.com.

The film focuses on an older writer who plans an elaborate revenge against the younger man who stole his wife from him.

Michael Caine, who starred as the young man in the original film version, has signed on to play the scheming writer -- played by Laurence Oliver in the 1974 movie. Jude Law steps into Caine's former role.

The Web site said that Branagh, who was nominated for a directing Oscar for the film "Henry V" in 1990, will work from an adaptation by Nobel Prize winner Harold Pinter.
