NEW YORK, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- New York's Apollo Theater re-opens this week after a recent remodeling to revamp the famed Harlem locale's image.
The Apollo will open its doors on Wednesday for its traditional "Amateur Night at the Apollo" and those in attendance will be able to see the results of the extreme makeover the 1914 shrine of rhythm and blues is enduring, the New York Daily News reports.
"When people walk past, they see the new marquee," said Apollo mainstay Billy Mitchell.
"Inside, the audience will see plasma screens on the walls, a brand-new stage, new seating and new stairs." he added. "We've taken a beating from fans for the way the place looked in the past. Now, when one comes to the Apollo Theater, they say, 'My God, look at this place.'"
The newspaper said more remodeling will occur over the next two years, but until then music fans can enjoy performances this year from singers Dionne Warwick, Queen Latifah and recent "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino.
