Shields accepts Cruise apology

BURBANK, Calif., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Brooke Shields says she has received a "heart-felt apology" from fellow Hollywood star Tom Cruise for his remarks about her post-partum depression.

Appearing on NBC's "The Tonight Show" Friday, Shields told host Jay Leno that Cruise had come to her house earlier in the day.

"And through it all, I was so impressed with how heartfelt it was," she said. "And I didn't feel at any time that I had to defend myself, nor did I feel that he was trying to convince me of anything other than the fact that he was deeply sorry. And I accepted it."

Cruise caused an uproar when he criticized Shields, author of "Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression." He is one of the world's best-known practitioners of Scientology, which rejects psychiatry and psychiatric treatments, including the use of anti-depressants.

Recently, Sumner Redstone, head of Paramount's parent company, Viacom Inc., ended the studio's contract with Cruise, citing his behavior.
