Nickleback's Kroeger denies alcohol charge

SURREY, British Columbia, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Nickelback lead singer Chad Kroeger plans to plead not guilty to charges of driving under the influence in Canada and will fight the charges.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said Saturday that Kroeger's attorney has vowed to contest the charges.

"Our position is clear that he did not commit the offence," said Marvin Stern.

Kroeger, whose real name is Chad Turton, was supposed to have appeared in Surrey provincial court Friday, but his lawyer appeared on his behalf. The case will be back in court next month.

Kroeger was pulled over by Surrey Royal Canadian Mounted Police two months ago due to the allegedly "suspicious" nature of his driving, the report said.

Representatives from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, who were also at the British Columbia courthouse Friday, told the CBC that celebrities should be careful about their behavior because they are role models for young people.

Meanwhile, Nickleback is on tour in the United States.
