Spielberg had no warning of Cruise firing

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Paramount Pictures power-broker Steven Spielberg was blind-sided by this week's firing of Tom Cruise, The New York Daily News reported.

"The story broke when Steven was on an airplane," his representative, Marvin Levy, told the newspaper. "He found out when the plane landed."

The director, who heads the Paramount-owned DreamWorks studio and directed Cruise in "Minority Report" and "War of the Worlds," was not consulted about the firing and Spielberg's company, Creative Artists Agency, still represents Cruise, the Daily News said.

The agency allegedly is furious about the interview Viacom Chief Sumner Redstone -- Paramount is a Viacom subsidiary -- gave to The Wall Street Journal, which leaves Spielberg stuck in the middle between the studio and the agency, the News said.

"Top Gun" Producer Jerry Bruckheimer, said Redstone "has the right to say what he wants," adding, "It's not what I would do."
