Cronkite's voice may rejoin CBS News

NEW YORK, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- When the revamped "CBS Evening News" makes its U.S. debut next month, host Katie Couric may be introduced by the voice of journalist Walter Cronkite.

The New York Post reported that the voice of the legendary newscaster, who retired as the show's host in 1981, may once again be broadcast by CBS in an opening narration when the new "Evening News" and Couric make their debuts on Sept. 5.

While CBS has been using the 89-year-old journalist's recorded narration in its rehearsals for series, a representative for the network would not confirm that Cronkite's introduction would be used when the revamped broadcasts start.

"We're not ready to confirm any of the details about 'CBS Evening News' that have not already been announced," said the representative.

After joining the "Evening News" in 1961, Cronkite rose in popularity in the news community through his reports on crucial events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy and the landing of the first man on the moon.
