The Scotland Portrait Gallery goes edgy

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is bringing in a very large collection of nude portraits next summer to rid itself of its old image.

Some of the world's leading contemporary artists' and photographers' works will be featured in the galleries first show dedicated to the nude body, the artists David Bailey and Francis Bacon, The Scotsman reported Tuesday.

One work of art that organizers are hoping to have on display is a video of David Beckham sleeping, by contemporary artist Sam Taylor-Wood.

"We're not out to shock people, but the key thing for us is to try and attract new visitors to the gallery. Hopefully this forthcoming exhibition will be of interest to younger people who are interested in seeing something that is contemporary and edgy," Julie Lawson, the exhibition's organizer, told The Scotsman.

"We're taking a bit of chance, but I think that we have sophisticated audiences in Edinburgh who will appreciate this kind of naked art," she added.
