Brittany Murphy's engagement is off

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Hollywood actress Brittany Murphy and film technician Joe Macaluso have ended their engagement, People magazine reported Tuesday.

The split was "amicable" and the couple "remain close friends and wish each other much happiness," Murphy's representative told People.

Murphy, 28, met Macaluso on the set of her film "Little Black Book," where he was responsible for lighting and electricity. Once the film wrapped up production, she asked him to the movies and they got engaged last New Year's Eve.

Murphy, who was previously engaged to manager Jeff Kwatinetz, denied another aborted attempt at marriage was looming when she was asked about her wedding plans at Sunday night's "Teen Choice Awards."

"Everything is going wonderful, thank you," People quoted her as saying. "I'm just living every moment, you know, enjoying my day."

The actress, who counts "8 Mile" and "The Groomsmen" among her film credits, was not wearing her engagement ring.
