LOS ANGELES, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- ABC News Monday announced "Primetime" co-anchor Chris Cuomo has been awarded the news anchor chair on the U.S. network's "Good Morning America."
Cuomo will have a heavy presence during the first hour of the Monday through Friday news/talk show when the focus is more on news and will also sub for hosts Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts, Daily Variety reported.
ABC News officials decided not to replace "GMA" host Charles Gibson when he was named anchor of ABC's "News World Tonight," making "GMA" the first network morning show with two women at the helm.
Senior Executive Producer Jim Murphy told Variety the Sawyer/Roberts experiment "has been working quite well" and no major format changes are planned for the fall, other than the addition of "some bells and whistles."
Cuomo, who will still serve as "Primetime" co-anchor, said he was excited to move into mornings and "speak to the mainstream of America."
"GMA" is the No. 2 rated morning show behind NBC's "Today," which will debut its new team of Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer in September.
