'Dark Shadows' 40th anniversary on DVD

NEW YORK, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- The final episodes of "Dark Shadows," the U.S. cult classic that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971 with a peak of 20 million viewers, are now on DVD.

The television series, which focused on the supernatural and occult, is celebrating its 40th anniversary, according to MPI Home Video.

The "Dark Shadows" Anniversary Festival is being held Aug. 25-27 at the New York Marriott, where a dozen cast members will appear, including David Selby (Quentin Collins), Lara Parker (Angelique), John Karlen (Willie Loomis), Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie Evans), Jerry Lacy (Reverend Trask), Donna McKechnie (Amanda Harris).

Set in the fishing village of Collinsport, Maine, "Dark Shadows" tracked hauntings at Collinwood, the mysterious estate of the wealthy Collins family. Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) played a sympathetic 175-year-old vampire.

"Dark Shadows" became a phenomenon among teens, college students and parents who loyally followed the daytime drama.
