Boy George begins N.Y. community service

NEW YORK, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Singer Boy George got a break with his garbage-picking punishment in New York, thanks to Chinatown beautification day and the Chinatown Youth Initiative.

Boy George, whose real name is George Alan O'Dowd, was sentenced to clean up lower Manhattan streets for five days for falsely reporting a break-in, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

O'Dowd reported for clean-up duty Monday, the newspaper said, but some 250 youths got the jump on him when they spent Sunday sweeping the streets, scraping gum off sidewalks and scooping up cigarette butts for Chinatown beautification day.

"We did a lot of the work for him but it's such a dirty place after a few days, it is going to be dirty again," predicted Ping Ling, 19, of the Chinatown Youth Initiative.
