NEW YORK, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Musician and actor/comedian Jack Black will host this year's MTV Video Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

"Prepare yourself for a rip-snortin' humdinger," Said Black, adding, "I am Jables, hear me roar." Jables is Black's nickname when he performs with his band, Tenacious D, People Magazine reported Friday.

The president of MTV, Christina Norman, described Black as the "perfect mix of comedy, rock, irreverence and star power."

The VMAs will air live on Aug. 31.

Black will next appear with his Tenacious D band mate Kyle Gass in Tenacious D in "The Pick of Destiny," due out Nov. 17.
