Three arrested in royal wiretapping

LONDON, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Three men were arrested following a seven-month Scotland Yard investigation after a newspaper story suggested that British royalty's phones were tapped.

A leaked conversation between a reporter and a royal aide regarding Prince William formed the basis for the newspaper story, The Times of London reported.

The Royal Editor of the "News of the World," Clive Goodman, 48, was arrested Tuesday at his home in southwest London. "The News of the World" is published by News International, which also publishes The Times.

Goodman and another man, 35, were questioned at Charing Cross Police Station. A third man, 50, was released on bail, police said.

Tapping phone calls violates the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, although police, public utilities and government agencies are permitted to tap.

Reports claim that the phone calls of others, including cabinet ministers and military leaders, have been tapped.

Scotland Yard said "police, as a result of their inquiries, now believe that public figures beyond the Royal Household have had their telephones intercepted which may have potential security implications."
