Four Spanish films premiere at Basque Fest

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Three new Spanish films are vying for selection in the Official Section competition at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain's Basque region.

A fourth film, "Mas alla del espejo," will be shown as a tribute to the festival's late director, Joaquin Jorda, who died in June, Daily Variety reported.

All four will debut at the Basque festival Sept. 21-30, having passed up the recent Toronto International Film Festival.

The new films are "Las Vidas de Celia" by Antonio Chavarrias; "Vete de Mi" by Victor Garcia Leon and "Lo que se de Lola" by Javier Rebollo. Chavarrias is the only one of the three with an established international reputation. His film, "Las Vidas de Celia," critiques Catalan society.

Garcia Leon, who co-directed "Mas Pena que Gloria" with Jonas Trueba in 2001 will unveil "Vete de Mi," a black comedy.

"Lo que se de Lola," made by Rebollo follows a voyeur who secretly observes his neighbor.

Three debuts in the New Directors section include "Backwoods" by Koldo Serra; "La Distancia" by Inaki Dorronsoro and "Kutsidazu Bidea, Ixabel" by Fernando Bernues and Mireia Gabi-londo, spoken in the Basque language.
