LILONGWE, Malawi, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Pop diva and activist Madonna is turning her attention to the estimated 1 million orphans in the Southeast African country of Malawi.

Malawi is a Pennsylvania-sized country that is known for four things: tobacco, drought, AIDS and malaria, Time magazine reported Thursday. The country also has a functioning democracy and little conflict.

Madonna has committed to raising at least $3 million to fund programs aimed at helping orphans in Malawi, which number about 1 million out of a population of 12 million.

She has already opened an orphan care center, which will feed and educate as many as 1,000 children a day, Time said.

"For the last few years, now that I have children and now that I have what I consider to be a better perspective on life, I have felt responsible for the children of the world," said Madonna, "I've been doing bits and bobs about it and I suppose I was looking for a big, big project I could sink my teeth into."
