SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The son of the late Olympic swimmer and Tarzan actor Johnny Weissmuller, Johnny Weissmuller Jr., has died of liver cancer at age 65 in San Francisco.

Weissmuller is probably best known as the son of the athlete who won five Olympic gold medals in swimming and later starring in 12 Tarzan films, the San Francisco Chronicle said Tuesday.

But Weissmuller also led his own full life, serving in the Navy, appearing in film, television and stage roles and working as a longshoreman on Bay Area docks, the newspaper said. He also more recently wrote a book about his father called "Tarzan, My Father."

Weissmuller is survived by his wife, daughter, stepsons and his sister.
