Office to investigate Gibson arrest

LOS ANGELES, July 30 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles County Sheriff's oversight office will investigate allegations actor Mel Gibson received preferential treatment during his arrest.

The Los Angeles Times reported the investigation is in response to allegedly authentic initial police reports posted on TMZ.com which said the "Lethal Weapon" star was abusive and shouted anti-Jewish slurs when arrested Friday on suspicion of drunk driving.

The information was missing from the final report.

The civilian-run investigation will look into any possible unfair treatment given to Gibson during his arrest and any relations the actor has had with the department, such as his past participation in a charity run by the Sheriff Lee Baca, the newspaper said.

"There is no coverup," Baca said. "Our job is not to (focus) on what he said. It's to establish his blood-alcohol level when he was driving and proceed with the case. Trying someone on rumor and innuendo is no way to run an investigation, at least one with integrity."

Gibson already has come forward and apologized for his unruly behavior and what he called "despicable" language during the arrest, citing an ongoing battle with alcoholism.
