Clapton cancels Moscow gig

MOSCOW, July 30 (UPI) -- Musician Eric Clapton has canceled his scheduled appearance in Red Square after Russian officials withdrew a permit for the concert.

The Moscow concert was to be the end of the 61-year-old entertainer's European tour. His tour now will end Monday in Helsinki, Finland, the BBC reported.

Clapton said on his Web site he was "extremely sorry" he had to cancel Thursday's Red Square concert, but the situation was "beyond his control."

He didn't elaborate on the reasons that the permit was not issued, the BBC reported. Later this year Clapton will tour the United States and Canada.
