'The Queen' to debut at New York Film Fest

NEW YORK, July 19 (UPI) -- A controversial new movie about the royal family's reaction to the death of Princess Diana will premiere at the New York Film Festival Sept. 29.

British director Stephen Frears says his film, "The Queen," recreates the week after Diana and Dodi Fayed were killed in a car crash, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

A scene that shows Queen Elizabeth, played by Helen Mirren, asleep in bed and being awakened by a chambermaid, has sparked controversy in Britain. But Mirren tells W magazine that she would be "devastated" if the film gave the queen any discomfort.

Frears said that the script of the movie is based on interviews with insiders and royal watchers.
