Iran halts 'Da Vinci' reprints

TEHRAN, July 26 (UPI) -- Iranians can still buy the Persian version of Dan Brown's bestseller, "The Da Vinci Code," but once it sells out, there will be no more.

Ron Howard's film of the thriller was banned from Iran and now the government has bowed to the request of three Christian clergymen and ordered no further reprints of the tome, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Christians around the world were disturbed by Brown's novel based on the theory that there are descendants of a union between Jesus and Mary Magdalene.

Although there are only believed to be 100,000 Christians among Iran's predominantly Muslim population, the culture ministry announced a ban on the "re-publication" of novel, "based on the request of three Christian clerics."

About 40 million copies of "The Da Vinci Code" have been sold worldwide.
