Danish film to tackle Don Juan opera

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, July 5 (UPI) -- Copenhagen Opera House director Kasper Bech Holten will direct a Danish film production of Mozart's "Don Juan" at a cost of almost $13 million.

Holten has previous experience managing expensive projects and major stars, including Placido Domingo in Wagner's "Nibelung Myth," the Copenhagen Post reported.

Michel Schønnemann of Blenkov & Schønnemann, the film's producer, said he was pleased to have Holten in the director's chair for the film.

"He's recognized as being a very talented director both here in Denmark as well as internationally,' said Schønnemann.

An international cast is being chosen for the film, which will be sung in English and filmed mostly in South Africa.

The film, which is expected to be released in 2009, will be designed to have broad appeal beyond just opera lovers, said Schønnemann.

"It will be current and modern - no white wigs and big fluffy collars," he said.
