CHICAGO, July 3 (UPI) -- Film critic Roger Ebert was in serious condition at a Chicago hospital after emergency surgery, his newspaper, The Chicago Sun-Times, reported.
Ebert, 64, underwent surgery Sunday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, to repair complications from an earlier cancer surgery, the newspaper said.
Ebert has had four cancer surgeries, including two on his salivary gland in 2003. He had undergone surgery on June 16 to remove a cancerous growth on the gland, and a blood vessel burst near the site of that operation Saturday night, the Sun-Times reported.
Ebert's vital signs appeared to be good after the operation, Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper said. Roeper and Ebert are co-hosts of "Ebert & Roeper," the TV show on which they offer their signature "thumbs up-thumbs down" movie reviews.
"Roger is a fighter, and I have every confidence and hope that he has thousands of movie reviews ahead of him," Roeper said. "Led of course by his wife, Chaz, he has an amazing circle of family and friends surrounding him with love and support. I also want to express gratitude to the many fans across the country who have already sent their best wishes."
