LOS ANGELES, June 27 (UPI) -- Actress Katie Cassidy has beat out singer Jessica Simpson for the role of Lucy Ewing in the movie based on the '80s TV series, "Dallas," tmz.com said.

The daughter of '70s heartthrob David Cassidy was chosen for the role in the Gurinder Chadha-directed film over the pop singer and over the "Laguna Beach" star Kristin Cavallari, the report said.

A co-star of the current No. 1 U.S. film, "Click," Cassidy is best known for her role as Zoe on the TV series, "7th Heaven."

Joining Cassidy when the filming for "Dallas" begins this October will be her co-stars singer/actress Jennifer Lopez and actor John Travolta, who stars as J.R. Ewing.
