MADRID, June 21 (UPI) -- Penelope Cruz will star opposite Oscar-winner Adrien Brody in "Manolete," a story about Spain's great matador who was tragically killed in the bullring in 1947.

Cruz plays Lupe Sino, the woman who captured the heart of Manuel Rodriguez Sanchez. The bullfighter was famous in the 1930s and 1940s throughout the Spanish-speaking world, hellomagazine.com reported.

Although Cruz, 32, who was born in Madrid, has been acclaimed for her appearances in Hollywood films, including "Sahara" and "Vanilla Sky," her career is also firmly established in independent films.

She was named best actress at the Cannes Film Festival this year for her role in Pedro Almodovar's "Volver."

Just recently, Cruz completed her acting assignment in "The Good Night" with British actors Martin Freeman and Keith Allen.
