Dan Rather signs off CBS for good

NEW YORK, June 20 (UPI) -- Sean McManus, president of CBS News, Tuesday announced Dan Rather is leaving the network after 44 years as an anchor and reporter.

"Of all the famous names associated with CBS News, the biggest and brightest on the marquee are Murrow, Cronkite and Rather," McManus said. "With the utmost respect, we mark the extraordinary and singular role Dan has played in writing the script of not only CBS News, but of broadcast journalism."

Rather was unable to reach an agreement with CBS on a new contract.

During his four decade-long career with CBS News, Rather wrote six books, anchored six presidential election campaigns and covered a dozen wars on five continents.

In 44 years he has braved hurricanes and floods, been beaten by a crazed maniac, dodged bullets and mouthed off to presidents, but he was discredited two years ago when he aired a questionable report on President George Bush's Air National Guard service during the Vietnam War.

Rather will be succeeded by former Today Show host Katie Couric.

Bruce Willis files lawsuit

LOS ANGELES, June 20 (UPI) -- Bruce Willis has filed a lawsuit against Anthony Goodrich, a Los Angeles paparazzo.

Willis said that Goodrich lied when he told TMZ that the actor assaulted him outside a West Hollywood restaurant, TMZ.com reported Tuesday.

Goodrich said that Willis smashed his camera into his face, causing a laceration to his nose and a chipped tooth.

Goodrich filed a police report the day after the incident, but the LAPD said two days later Goodrich "was re-interviewed and refused to prosecute so the case was closed."

The lawsuit from Willis alleges that Goodrich and other "stalker-paparazzi," flashed high powered strobe lights in Willis' face as he was entering the restaurant and that "Goodrich falsely stated that Willis stiff-armed Goodrich, shoved the photographer and pushed his camera into his face."

The suit also claims the TMZ article exposed Willis to "hatred, contempt, ridicule and obloquy..."

He is seeking no less than $1 million in damages.

Donald Trump said on Monday that NBC executives have ordered another season of his reality show. Trump is in Los Angeles shooting the sixth season which airs in January, the Daily Variety reported Tuesday.

"NBC called me and said they are picking up No. 7," Trump said. "We may do it in Las Vegas or Miami. ... We'll make that decision in the next two months."

Even with last season's ratings drop, Trump remains positive about "The Apprentice," noting its finale ranked No. 2 in the week it aired.

He also repeated previous statements that the Martha Stewart version of "The Apprentice" hurt his show.

"It wasn't very good, and she wasn't very good," Trump said. "This is a very important franchise. (NBC) learned their lesson. They'll never use anyone but Trump."
