Guster expands sound on new album

NEW YORK, June 20 (UPI) -- The rock band Guster's mission on its latest album was to continue the sonic expansion it began with 2003's "Keep it Together."

The group's Adam Gardner says that expanded to a quartet with the full-time addition of multi-instrumentalist Joe Pisapia has allowed Guster to get even more adventurous with its sound on the new "Ganging Up on the Sun."

"The last record was about not being limited instrumentally," says Gardner. "This one is about not being limited musically or genre-wise. It definitely stretches in a lot of different directions, yet it still holds together as a collection.

"I don't think we were entirely sure we could do that until this record, and it felt really good."

After playing some one-off festival dates to promote the new album, Guster will begin a summer tour with Ray LaMontagne on July 11 in Baltimore.
