LONDON, June 19 (UPI) -- After 40 years of guitar smashing fun, "The Who" guitarist Pete Townshend says he will abuse the axes no more.

He has destroyed hundreds of guitars at the explosive climax of the band's concerts, the Times of London reported Monday.

Townshend, who is 61, smashed his last guitar at a concert in Yokohama, Japan, two years ago. He took apart the gold-sprayed Fender Stratocaster at the climax of The Who's first Japanese show in July 2004.

Fans can win the splintered Fender Strat, signed by Townshend, by entering a charity lottery organized by his partner, Rachel Fuller.

"Rachel plans to sell $10 lottery tickets for the last ever guitar to be smashed by the legendary me, at Yokohama in Japan," said Townshend.

The proceeds will go to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
