RAMA, Ontario, June 15 (UPI) -- As he begins his latest All-Starr Band tour, Ringo Starr is mourning the loss of a previous All-Starr -- Billy Preston.
"It's a shame," the former Beatles drummer said of Preston, who died June 5. "Billy's been in a coma for a long time, so it's a release, really. Billy was the finest musician, and over all these years Billy, I felt, was my friend."
Preston assisted the Beatles in the studio on several occasions, including the "Abbey Road" and "Let it Be" albums. He was part of Starr's inaugural All-Starr band in 1989.
Starr has been invited to attend Preston's funeral Monday -- an off day from the All-Starr tour -- in Inglewood, Calif.
Preston, who was a popular session musician and a hit-making artist in his own right, suffered from malignant hypertension, which resulted in kidney failure. He was 59.
