Chappelle radio interview ends abruptly

NEW YORK, June 14 (UPI) -- Comic Dave Chappelle, who walked out on a multimillion-dollar TV deal without explanation, bolted from a New York radio interview when the host asked why.

Chappelle apparently asked to be interviewed by phone on Miss Jones' WQHT-FM morning show Tuesday to discuss the release of his new "Block Party" DVD, but refused to talk about his Comedy Central show when the subject was broached, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.

"I'm trying to play Gandhi," Chappelle said.

When sidekick Michael Shaun jokingly asked if Chappelle had been "smoking something," Chappelle ended the interview.

"I feel like a fool for trying to be nice," Miss Jones told the Daily News, adding he didn't say much about his DVD either. "What I should have said was, 'What the (expletive) are you calling for?'"

Chappelle's sudden rise to success and abrupt reversal has left fans scratching their heads. The only explanation he's given thus far has been that continuing the show would have risked his mental health, the newspaper said.
