Record breaking ratings for '06 World Cup

NEW YORK, June 13 (UPI) -- The 2006 World Cup is on its way to becoming the most watched soccer tournament in U.S. history.

Univision's Spanish-language coverage of the World Cup is breaking viewership records in all key demographics, Daily Variety reports.

But Univision is not alone in getting outstanding ratings.

ABC got off to a solid start in the Nielsen overnights for the opening weekend of the World Cup, with a 65 percent ratings jump from the equivalent contests on ABC four years ago.

More viewers have been able to tune into the contest with matches airing in the morning and early afternoon in the United States.

Univision, which paid $150 million for the Spanish-language rights to both 2002 and 2006 World Cups, is carrying live coverage of all 56 games this year, including the championship match.

Last Sunday's game between Mexico and Iran, had a 5.4 million average household rating, making it the most-watched sporting event in Spanish-language TV history, surpassing even previous World Cup final matches.
