NEW YORK, May 31 (UPI) -- New York's DC Comics is reintroducing Batwoman -- as a lesbian.
DC is putting a twist on the super heroine to further diversify its comic line and put a new spark to its franchise, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.
"We deal with stories about identities and secret identities," DC Comics Vice President/Executive Editor Dan DiDio told the Daily News. "And we think that a character who is openly gay, yet keeps it a secret from certain members of her own family, has a lot of strong emotional layers."
Some debate has already started on the Internet about whether the character change will be good or bad for Batwoman.
"Unless she has lesbian superpowers ... it really doesn't change her character except the soap opera value," former DC Comics illustrator Jimmy Palmiotti said.
