PHILADELPHIA, May 30 (UPI) -- Philadelphia police investigating the shooting and robbery of rapper Beanie Sigel say the artist's account of the incident checks out.

Sigel, whose real name is Dwight Grant, was shot twice in the upper arm Thursday morning after five men in two cars boxed in his vehicle and took his jewelry worth about $75,000 and $3,000 in cash, he told police.

The rapper drove himself to an area hospital where he was treated for the gunshot wounds and released later Thursday.

Police initially voiced doubts about Sigel's story when investigators failed to find any shell casings at the scene or residents who heard the gunshots, SOHH.com reported.

However, further investigation backed the rapper's account and police were looking for the suspects as well as anyone with information about the crime, SOHH.com said.
