Slaying of Detroit rapper ruled justified

DETROIT, May 30 (UPI) -- The shooting death of Detroit rapper Proof was justified and the admitted trigger man will not be charged with murder, Detroit authorities said Tuesday.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said evidence "clearly shows that Mario Etheridge acted in lawful self-defense of another" when he shot Deshaun Holton, known to D12 and Eminem fans simply as Proof, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Proof reportedly shot and killed Etheridge's cousin, Keith Bender Jr., during an early morning fight that broke out April 11 in a club along 8 Mile, the road Eminem made famous in his film of the same name.

Etheridge, who was working as a bouncer at the club, then opened fire on Proof, who was dead on arrival at an area hospital. Bender lingered for a week before dying of his injury.

Etheridge has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm in a building, both felonies.
