Broadway celebrates Drama Desk Awards

NEW YORK, May 22 (UPI) -- Broadway's "The Drowsy Chaperone" led the field with seven 2006 Drama Desk Awards presented during the ceremony at New York's Lincoln Center.

A British import, "The History Boys," won five of the awards presented to Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions in a ceremony hosted by "Fiddler of the Roof" star Harvey Fierstein Sunday, Playbill.com reported.

"Drowsy" won for outstanding musical as well as featured actress, set design, costume design, music, lyrics and book. "History Boys" took outstanding play as well as top actor, featured actress, featured actor and director.

John Doyle's revival of the musical "Sweeney Todd" won four awards while "Jersey Boys" and "Awake and Sing!" each won two awards.

The casts of "Stuff Happens" and "Awake and Sing!" received outstanding ensemble performance awards.

The Drama Desk Awards were taped and will be shown at a later date on PBC stations nationwide.
