ATHENS, Greece, May 18 (UPI) -- The Pan-American "Eurovision Song Contest" reached a milestone in Athens, Greece, Thursday night with its 1,000th song since 1956.

The distinction went to the eighth contestant in the live broadcast of the "Eurovision" semifinal, Irish singer Brian Kennedy and his song, "Every Song Is a Cry for Love," Billboard.com reported.

The Web site noted it's only fitting that the 1000th song belonged to Ireland, which has won the contest seven times, more than any other country.

The singing order was set by random draw.

The 10 performers who receive the most votes after Thursday's semifinal will compete in the finale Saturday night.
